Metrocon: A Review

For those of you who don’t know, Metrocon was held this weekend in Tampa, FL. Kira and I attended and were able to represent the Keyboard Samurai. We met a lot of amazing people this weekend, and will hopefully be able to network with new groups. Midnight Cinema was also there, and we had a blast hanging out with them. They were dressed in Repo! outfits most of the weekend, though Saturday they were mainly in Gundam Wing cosplay (holla!). Kira was either in normal clothes or steampunk-style, while I proudly displayed my Duo Maxwell for the second year in a row. If anyone met us, please feel free to get in contact.

The weekend was absolutely thrilling, filled with Gundam Wing and new friends. There were some amazing people there (not just the voice actors), and I was able to meet everyone from locals to a group that flew in from New York. But one of the greatest moments for me was the Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Picture Show held on midnight Sunday. It was a shadowcast of the Blog comprised of Team Metro members and their friends, some of which had previously shadowed Rocky in the Tampa cast. If you don’t know/haven’t seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, first of all remedy that. Then, feel sad that you missed watching this amazing cast. They were (to steal the ficus’ word) phenomenal. The movie is comprised of so many quick cuts and scene changes that shadowing it is difficult just from a technical standpoint. But this group really pulled it off. I can’t brag enough about them. Not only did they master it technically, their actors were all spot on.

The show started with a contest to see who in the audience would be the next member of the Evil League of Evil. Those vying for roles came up and gave their name and catchphrase, and received scores from the judges: Captain Hammer (who never actually gave numbers, only hilarious commentary), Penny, and Billy. The decision, however, came down to audience cheering. With the new member selected (a one “Electro-Boy” dressed in full body orange spandex with bug zappers in hand) the show began. I don’t want to give much detail regarding what they did during the show, because I would hate to risk spoiling it for anyone who wants to see their next performance. Just know that they took a hell of a lot of time making sure they covered everything, including certain camera shots and character details. They even incorporated some competitors of the opening contest as part of the League. Afterward I spoke to Sherman, the group’s organizer/director/Dr. Horrible extraordinaire, and learned that they were immediately requested to perform at another convention later this year. I’m definitely looking forward to it, as I can’t wait to see what this group can do now that they’ve worked out one performance. I hope that they become an official cast (they hadn’t even given themselves a name, as they had only planned to do the show at Metrocon), and that we KeySams can support them in their future endeavors.

As you can tell, the weekend was a great success and lots of fun. I hope that I can get in contact with anyone who was there and spread the word about Repo!. I’m definitely looking forward to the next convention, and hope that more of our cast can attend in the future.
