Well, last weekend was Spooky Empire’s convention held in Orlando. Packed full of horror geeks, celebrities, and costumes, Spooky Empire truly lived up to its moniker of “Ultimate Horror Weekend”. The Keyboard Samurai were in attendance (those who could scrape up the time and money to do so), as well as Unworthy Heirs, Degenerates, 21st Century’s Cure, and I believe I heard tell of some members from the SoCal army, most of them appearing on Friday to watch Midnight Cinema’s performance of Repo!, in which yours truly played Shilo. The night went off well, with only some AV problems that put the show back, but did lead to Pavi and the Genterns having an impromptu Sexy Party, so I ask you, was it really for the worst? (If I manage to find video of the actual party, I’ll make sure to post it.) Among the celebrities at the convention were none other than Terrance Zdunich, Darren Smith, Bill Moseley, and J. LaRose. It was certainly an honor to perform in front of them, and I hope that they will return to Florida in the future for more of our army’s shenanigans. There was a spectacular turn out for the show, and the little room was packed with people so in love with Repo! to the point where they would sacrifice the well-being of their spines and sit on the floor for over two hours peering over heads to see the stage. At the end of the night, I was pretty sure some people would need to contact Geneco in order to walk again. That said, the weekend was a resounding success, and the love and knowledge of Repo! was spread to others around the convention like the bubonic plague spread through Europe (with lots of screams and oozing pustules?).

Saturday night held a special surprise for me, as The Crazy Random Happenstance Shadowcast for Dr. Horrible made an appearance. (I seem to be failing at finding their YouTube account, so if anyone can give me a link, I’d be much obliged.) I’ve mentioned them previously in regards to their performance at Metrocon, and since then they’ve only improved. Their timing is still spot on and now their collection of props has been increased and perfected. They even handed out a multi-page script of possible callbacks, including my personal favorite, a reference to Kanye West’s ever-thriving ego, as Dr. Horrible stops Captain Hammer mid-speech with his freeze ray – you can imagine. I’m most definitely hoping to see them continue in their efforts to bring Dr. Horrible to people around Florida, as they are an exemplary shadowcast. And with luck, perhaps sometime in the future The Keyboard Samurai can have a back-to-back night with CRH. So if you know of them having a show at some convention around Florida, definitely check them out; I can promise you the hour is well worth it.

Got another announcement regarding an upcoming convention! We, The KeySams, are now the official Repo! shadowcast for ZonaCon! The convention runs from November 20 – 22, and we will be performing Saturday night, the 21st. Not only are we going to be performing that night, but the one and only Terrance Zdunich will attending as well! The weekend is Repo! themed, so please make sure to check it out. There’s been some negativity regarding the PR of this convention, but please don’t let that deter you from attending. A lot of time and money is going into this con to make it the best it can possibly be, so let’s start supporting it and help spread Repo! even farther than ever. So keep the date in mind, because this will be one event you won’t want to miss!

For those of you who don’t know, Metrocon was held this weekend in Tampa, FL. Kira and I attended and were able to represent the Keyboard Samurai. We met a lot of amazing people this weekend, and will hopefully be able to network with new groups. Midnight Cinema was also there, and we had a blast hanging out with them. They were dressed in Repo! outfits most of the weekend, though Saturday they were mainly in Gundam Wing cosplay (holla!). Kira was either in normal clothes or steampunk-style, while I proudly displayed my Duo Maxwell for the second year in a row. If anyone met us, please feel free to get in contact.

The weekend was absolutely thrilling, filled with Gundam Wing and new friends. There were some amazing people there (not just the voice actors), and I was able to meet everyone from locals to a group that flew in from New York. But one of the greatest moments for me was the Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Picture Show held on midnight Sunday. It was a shadowcast of the Blog comprised of Team Metro members and their friends, some of which had previously shadowed Rocky in the Tampa cast. If you don’t know/haven’t seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, first of all remedy that. Then, feel sad that you missed watching this amazing cast. They were (to steal the ficus’ word) phenomenal. The movie is comprised of so many quick cuts and scene changes that shadowing it is difficult just from a technical standpoint. But this group really pulled it off. I can’t brag enough about them. Not only did they master it technically, their actors were all spot on.

The show started with a contest to see who in the audience would be the next member of the Evil League of Evil. Those vying for roles came up and gave their name and catchphrase, and received scores from the judges: Captain Hammer (who never actually gave numbers, only hilarious commentary), Penny, and Billy. The decision, however, came down to audience cheering. With the new member selected (a one “Electro-Boy” dressed in full body orange spandex with bug zappers in hand) the show began. I don’t want to give much detail regarding what they did during the show, because I would hate to risk spoiling it for anyone who wants to see their next performance. Just know that they took a hell of a lot of time making sure they covered everything, including certain camera shots and character details. They even incorporated some competitors of the opening contest as part of the League. Afterward I spoke to Sherman, the group’s organizer/director/Dr. Horrible extraordinaire, and learned that they were immediately requested to perform at another convention later this year. I’m definitely looking forward to it, as I can’t wait to see what this group can do now that they’ve worked out one performance. I hope that they become an official cast (they hadn’t even given themselves a name, as they had only planned to do the show at Metrocon), and that we KeySams can support them in their future endeavors.

As you can tell, the weekend was a great success and lots of fun. I hope that I can get in contact with anyone who was there and spread the word about Repo!. I’m definitely looking forward to the next convention, and hope that more of our cast can attend in the future.

Jcon was a huge success!

Thank you Kristin for making this what it was. Keyboard Samurai had a mini-cast present yesterday who performed indoors and out; but today we had a larger group and were actually drawing people out from the venues to witness our antics. Major “Kthnx Bi” to the dude in the white tie and no shirt for asking us to move our performance away from the main building, I suppose they didn’t like us upstaging what was occurring indoors. The crowds were large, the music loud, and the applause refreshing.

Thank you to Kristen (Graverobber), Laurel (Blind Mag), Kat (Luigi), Cindy (Shilo) and Keith (Pavi) for taking time out from the convention to perform and pass out nearly 150 fliers to the crowds which formed. Additional thanks to our additional entourage who attended today including Cory (Nathan), Itzel (Amber), and Noreen (Luigi) for making today great. Lastly, before the photos are dispersed throughout the internet, who ever wasn’t able to attend missed the debut performance of The Ficus as Rotti Largo.

Thank you again to Cindy, Kat, Laurel, Keith, and Kristen for your dedication to the cause, and to Diana and the girl in the cute cat beanie who shall remain nameless for the time being (yes, I look forward to your email) for documenting our time at the convention.

If you have any photos of the event, please feel free to use the director’s link to the left.

Much love,
The Ficus (Jcon’s only Rotti Largo)
